Portraiture is one of the most rewarding and exciting pursuits
in photography, requiring us to interact with our subject, location,
light and atmosphere we find or create. With a little creative
control, we are either photographing life as it happens or creating
a controlled environment to capture a magical moment of connectivity
between photographer and subject.
This 2-day, fast paced workshop examines how to approach the subject,
create a mood through lighting, human emotion, and stay open to
all the possibilities that may arise in the moment. Participants
practice how to pre-visualize photographic ideas, while being
prepared to abandon them for something more creative that may
come up during the time shared with the subject.
A great portrait is a moment of clarity, revealing something special
about the subject at that moment. What makes a portrait both powerful
and memorable is its ability to allow us to believe we are getting
to know something about the subject. This workshop is about getting
behind the surface veneer of our subjects to see part of their
personality. Assignments include both spontaneous and “formal“
portraits and working with other participants as subjects.
Participants in this workshop learn to understand and apply the
principles of location portraiture through the creative possibilities
of location, light, and most importantly the subject.
